Calculations were performed to determine the effect of scattering on the pulse length of a laser beam as it propagates in a foggy atmosphere with a meteorological range of 132.8 meters. For an argon laser with a pulse length of 10 to the minus 10th power seconds it was found that the shape of the laser pulse is not greatly affected by scattering within the foggy atmosphere. A study was made to determine if a Monte Carlo calculation of the energy density distribution in a laser beam would be feasible. The results of the study indicate that a Monte Carlo calculation, based on a random variation of the atmospheric index of refraction along the path of the laser beam, is feasible. It is proposed that a Monte Carlo procedure, based on the techniques outlined in the report, be developed. (Author)
