A Computer Program for Dynamic Spectrum Analysis Applied to VLF Radio Phenomena with Examples and Comparisons to Rayspan Results

A computer program which samples single channel analog input data and Fourier transforms the resultant time series in short segments to produce a computed spectrogram is described. This report represents a guide to the use of the program which operates on the Sigma-5 computer and uses specialized peripheral devices at that facility. Examples of the operation of the program and results of its application to the spectrum analysis of VLF radio phenomena (whistlers and artificially stimulated emissions) are presented. Comparisons to the typical rayspan spectra of VLF data are also shown. The dynamic spectral analysis of other similar data may profit from application of the techniques discussed here. (Author)
