摘要

The time-of-flight spectrometer (T.O.F.S.) technique has proven to be a very useful tool for investigating monenergetic charged particle beams. In particular, it has been the singularly most important diagnostic measurement used for determining the performance of colloidal electric propulsion thrusters (1, 3). The analysis presented here points out how significant errors, greater than 10%, in the particle mass flux may be commonplace in currently used data reduction techniques. An alternative data reduction approach is suggested. The time-of-flight data presented in the literature typically represents the best data obtained in the particular experiment. In this paper some of the data that has anomolies present is examined to see what information can be gleaned. For example in the generation of a positively charged colloidal beam an electrical discharge will occasionally occur at the source. This discharge will frequently be invisible to the eye but is quite apparent on the T.O.F. trace. This problem is analyzed. Secondary charged particle effects on the T.O.F. trace are also discussed.
