Development of Surface Treatments for High-Modulus Graphite Filaments

A factorial experiment was conducted to establish the effect of borocarbon surface treatment on the performance of high-modulus graphite filaments in epoxy composites. The process was essentially one in which an incandescent graphite yarn was subjected to chemical vapor deposition. Examination of treated yarn by an electron-beam microprobe indicated that the desposition of boron occurred mainly on the fibers comprising the outer surface (periphery) of the yarn bundle. The composite of treated fiber and epoxy resin was found to contain about 0.13 percent boron. (Author)
