Excitation of Gases Using Wavelength-Tunable Lasers

Recent developments in liquid dye lasers, semiconductor lasers, and nonlinear optical techniques have made possible the production of high-intensity monochromatic radiation at wavelengths ranging from the near ultraviolet to the far infrared. Wavelength tuning opens an entirely new dimension in the spectroscopy and resonant excitation of gases. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art in wavelength-tunable lasers. A number of applications are also discussed, including selective excitation spectroscopy, plasma ionization enhancement, and velocity determinations in high-speed gas flow. (Author)
