Protection of DSRV Seal Seat Surfaces Exposed to Cyclic Pressure in Seawater

The efficacy of two coating systems in preventing corrosion of seal seats similar to those used for the through-hull electrical penetrators on the Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle (DSRV) was evaluated under simulated DSRV operating conditions. A very thin (.0002 in. to .0003 in.) wash primer reduced corrosion of the seal seats for a short period and a thicker (.0023 in. to .0025 in.) coating system prevented seal seat corrosion for 183 simulated service cycles in pressurized seawater.
