Army Cardiac Programmer

The Army Cardiac Programmer is an electronic device that synchronizes the Army Pulsatile Blood Pump with the electrocardiogram (ECG) to allow the pump to be used for synchronous cardiac assistance (to aid the failing heart.) The programmer is a portable, battery operated device that processes the ECG and, after a settable delay period following the peak of the ECG, provides a signal to a solenoid valve that triggers the Army pump. Two breadboard programmers have been used on dogs for such procedures as arterial-arterial pumping (using femoral or iliac arteries in the legs) and left atrial-arterial pumping (left-heart bypass). However, an improved model has been constructed, and it is now available for use by other Army pump evaluators. (Author)
