Comparative Solutions for the Response of Restrained, Rigid-Body Underwater Structures to Acoustic Shock

The report describes the problem of predicting the response of fixed underwater structures to a shock wave propagating through the water. Two idealized structures are considered; an elastically-restrained rigid sphere and an elastically-restrained rigid cylinder. The shock is assumed to be an exponentially-decaying pressure pulse in an acoustic fluid. Solutions to the exact equations are obtained analytically for the spherical structure and by Bellman's numerical inversion procedure for both structures. Previously obtained solutions for the restrained cylindrical structure, simplified by the Mindlin-Bleich approximation, are found to be in agreement. Response curves are given for both structural types over a range of parameters. The effects of drag are discussed. (Author)
