Flush-Deck Nozzles (Navy Type S) for Fire Suppresion. Part I. Discharge Pattern Studies.

Previous large-scale fire tests have shown that the spray discharge from the Type S flush-deck nozzles,as originally installed on aircraft carriers for nuclear-biological-chemical wash-down purposes,was not efficient for fire suppression in the presence of high wind. The resultant spray patterns of the basic nozzle and six experimental configurations have been analyzed for their maximum reach,evenness of distribution of falling spray,and height of spray trajectory. The maximum height of the spray could be held to 12-24inches above the deck but this limited the horizontal reach to 17feet. (Author)
