Continuum Theory of Mixtures.

The report contains an introduction to the modern continuum theory of mixtures. The first chapter contains a discussion of the general principles of continuum mechanics as they apply to mixture theories. The second and final chapter applies these general principles to the study of two special types of mixtures. The first type is a mixture of gases while the second type is a mixture of a gas and an isotropic solid. The second type of mixture is the basis for a porous media theory. The topics discussed within this report are essentially the same as those presented in a series of lectures to the Solid Mechanics Branch of the Terminal Ballistics Laboratory at the Aberdeen Research and Development Center during May and June 1970. As was the case with my lectures,this report is intended to provide an introduction to continuum theories of mixtures for people whose primary background is in solid or fluid mechanics. As a result,no effort was made to study the most general types of mixture theories. The special theories discussed in Chapter 2were selected because of their simplicity and because they can easily be compared with classical theories of mixtures. (Author)
