Studies of the Breakdown Mechanisms of Polymers. VI. The Thermal Decomposition of Polybenzoxazoles and Polybenzothiazoles

The report describes work on the thermal breakdown mechanism of aromatic-heterocyclic polymers. Described is the flash pyrolysis of model benzoxazoles and benzothiazoles, and the decomposition of polybenzoxazoles and benzothiazoles. Each polymer was decomposed stepwise in vacuum at two or three different temperatures, between 450 and 660C. The gases were analyzed by mass spectroscopy. The residues were subjected to elemental analysis and infrared spectroscopy and overall breakdown mechanisms were postulated on the basis of the results. (Author)
