Development of Batch-Control Techniques for Synthetic Lubricants.

Differences in batch to batch production of a synthetic lubricant were investigated by thermal analysis. For this purpose ten batches of a lubricant formulation were considered. The lubricants were high molecular weight adipates or hepanoates. The specific techniques applied were differential thermal analysis,thermogravimetric analysis and derivature thermogravimetric analysis. A mechanistic investigation was also undertaken on three selected lubricants. This involved investigation of the thermal and oxidative degradation of basestock lubricants in various combinations with additives,and under various atmospheric conditions. Supplementary techniques included infrared spectroscopy of residues obtained during complete or partial thermal analysis,and gas chromatographic and mass spectral analysis of volatile reaction products.
