Experimental measurements are described of the various types and stages of crack-tip deformation which accompanies crack growth in boron-aluminum sheet and in laminar steel plate. Optical interference and oblique-light photography are used to show the interaction of a crack with individual fibers and layers in the two systems for various tensile loads and specimen configurations. A fracture mechanics analysis is used to categorize the fracture behavior of boron-aluminum specimens of different fiber orientation. The crack-tip deformation in laminar steel plate under fatigue load is related to the interlayer bond strength and to the subsequent fracture behavior of the plate. (Author)
