The relative toxicity of the technical grade synthetic pyrethroid insecticide (5-benzyl-3-furyl) methyl-2,2-dimethyl-3-(2-methylpropenyl) cyclopropanecarboxylate (SBP-1382) was investigated using mice, rats, rabbits, and dogs. The technical grade compound did not produce primary irritation when applied to the intact skin of rabbits and only transitory erythema to abraded skin. No corneal injury, iritis, or conjunctivitis were observed after a single application of the technical compound to the eyes of rabbits. Data indicate little acute toxic hazard from ingestion. The intravenous ALD in rabbits and dogs was greater than 100 mg/kg. The distribution of tritium-labeled SBP-1382 in rabbits and dogs showed that the lungs accumulated the largest amount of radioactive SBP-1382 or metabolites in animals sacrificed up to 24 hours after intravenous administration. No prenatal toxicity was observed when SBP-1382 was administered intraperitoneally, orally or by inhalation to pregnant albino rats. Acute 1- and 4- hour aerosol exposures to animals caused no effects. No significant changes occurred in dogs or rats as a result of repeated exposures to aerosols of SBP-1382 for 5 hours per day, 5 days per week for 6 weeks at a concentration of 250 mg/cu M. (Author)
