A Study of Water Waves Generated by Tectonic Displacements

The Eulerian incomprssible hydrodynamic numerical modeling method was used to study tsunamis in the vicinity of their source. An example study was done using motion of the eastern end of the Mendocino Escarpment for the source. The resulting tsunami was observed for the first 200 seconds after generation. The initial single crest of the tsunami split into two crests moving in opposite directions. The waves were observed to be dispersive and additional crests had formed by the end of the observation period. Wave crest elevation, wave speed and water particle velocity were observed and analyzed. (Author)
