A New Phenomenological Approach to the Turbulent Shear Flows

A general turbulent shear flow theory is developed here applicable to both wall turbulent shear flow as well as the free turbulent shear flow. This theory is essentially based on the establishment of a rate equation for the Reynolds stress obtained from a simple dimensional analysis of the important flow characteristics. This equation, together with the mean equations of motion form a hyperbolic system. Numerical integrations by the method of characteristics have been employed to obtain deailed solutions. For the time being, the present theory has been applied to various flow cases such as the turbulent boundary layer with various pressure gradients, the turbulent wake after a trailing edge as well as the flow near separation.
