Ray tracing is much in use for mapping sound propagation in the sea. The sound mapping produces an intensity-ratio distribution, as an emanation from a given location, computed over a directed vertical section. The mapping can be exploited as the field of listening coverage for a receiver at a location, or as the field of insonification produced by a source at the same location. The authors address the ray-tracing schemes which advance rays by progression in depth, from one specified depth to the next, based on a linear variation in sound speed in eachincremental depth advancement. These schemes have the advantage of computational speed, but no produce spurious caustics as they now stand unrefined. The report develops in detail a refinement for precluding the formation of spurious caustics in sound mapping in the realm of a single sound-speed profile, flat-bottom region.
