Investigation of Maintenance-Free High Rate,Nickel-Cadmium Batteries for Aircraft Application.

The objective of the program was to develop an integrated power system consisting of a hermetically sealed,maintenance-free,nickel,cadmium battery and associated charge control-charge conditioning unit for aircraft application. The system must be capable of delivering high rate discharges for engine starting. Charge acceptance of sealed nickel-cadmium batteries to a fixed voltage was determined at temperatures from +20 F to -40 F. The high rate charge-discharge behavior of polypropylene separators in sealed cells was investigated from 0F to 140F. A summary of flight test data on a UH-1(U)F helicopter is presented. (Author)
