The room temperature tensile properties of age-hardened Ti-Al and Ti-Cu in the concentration range from 9.7to 18.6and 0.9to 4at. % respectively were investigated. The results were correlated to the microstructure and to the observed interaction mechanism between moving dislocations and precipitated particles. For each given volume fraction of the precipitates there exists a critical particle size below which the particles were sheared and above which they were by-passed by the dislocations. It was shown that the former dislocation mechanism was associated with extreme brittleness of the alloys,whereas the latter mechanism gave rise to a pronounced increase of elongation to fracture without appreciable decline in flow stress.
