Reactions of Heavy Metals with Soils with Special Regard to their Application in Sewage Wastes.

High figures quoted for heavy metals in plants shows that the unwanted accumulation of a foreign metal might be harvested by growing a specialist crop, e.g., harvesting nitrogen. This report does not conclude such findings. Materials containing foreign metals added to the soil induce a permanent change (in the soil). Periodic addition of these metals remain harmlessly in the soil for many years, however a point in time is reached when a decision must be made to discontinue this practice. The metal laden top soil can be removed and the subsoil rich in nutrients from previous applications of nitrogen and phosphorous utilized. The report concludes that more field studies are needed to evaluate the effects of metals on soils and plants. (Author)
