A Study of Vibration Problems Experienced by Aluminum Hull Patrol Gunboats (PG-84 Class)

An excessive, shaft-frequency vibration problems was identified on the hull and superstructure of the PG-84 class boats. A systematic series of trials coupled with computer analysis led to the isolation of the exciting mechanism. This mechanism was found to be the result of hydrodynamically induced propeller forces which were caused by deviation from propeller specifications. Recommendations are made for improved propeller blade manufacturing processes to eliminate this problem. A proposed vibration criteria for these craft is submitted for inclusion in shipboarding specifications. (Author)
