Simulation of Hot Forming Operations by Means of Torsion Testing.

A torsion test apparatus is described which is capable of deforming samples at shear strain rates in the range 0.00001to 10/secs and at temperatures up to about 1200deg C. Samples can be deformed to fixed strains at high strain rate and quenched in situ immediately upon termination of the test. The alloys Ti-6Al-4V, Udimet 700and D-6ac were investigated for their torsional strength and ductility properties at various high strain rates and high temperatures;the structural changes accompanying hot deformation were also evaluated. A comparison was made of the structures obtained by extrusion with the structures obtained by torsional deformation at approximately comparable strain,strain rate and temperatures. (Author)
