The Influence of Thermomechanical Processing on the Structure and Properties of Maraging Steel.

A plate of an 18% Ni (250grade) maraging steel was homogenized,cold rolled,and recrystallized to produce a fine-grained,homogeneous structure. The strength properties were then measured as a function of cold rolling prior to aging. Material in the solution-heat-treated condition exhibited substantial strengthening from cold rolling. The strength increase and the rate of strengthening were proportional to the amount of cold work. This benefit,of up to 50 KSI,was retained during aging for three hours at 900deg F. The toughness,as indicated by W/A values,decreased as the strength increased,but was somewhat higher than is usually observed for this type of alloy at a 280 KSI yield stress level. The structures produced by cold rolling and aging were systematically investigated by transmission electron microscopy. (Author)
