Remotely Controlled Ambush Light.

The Ambush Light,Model ALX-1(LWL) was developed by the US Army Land Warfare Laboratory in response to a requirement for a device to illuminate the killing zone of an ambush. The Army Concept Team in Vietnam evaluated the light from 1September through 30November 1970. Ambush Lights were issued to infantry companies of the 23d Infantry Division and employed on platoon and squad-sized ambush patrols and in fire support base perimeter defense. Users WERE OF DIVIDED OPINION REGARDING THE ADEQUACY OF ILLUMINATION PROVIDED BY THE LIGHT AND CONSIDERED THE WEIGHT EXCESSIVE. Alkaline dry cells deteriorated under shipment and storage conditions. It was concluded that the Ambush Light was unsuitable for RVN use and that the portable,battery-powered light offered no advantage over existing pyrotechnic devices. (Author)
