Geology of the Ontong Java Plateau

A geologic investigation of the Ontong Java Plateau in the western equatorial Pacific north of the Solomon Islands, using continuous reflection profiles taken between 1966 and 1971, has been completed. Bathymetric, sedimentary isochron, and structure contour charts constructed for this region show the top of the Plateau to lie about 2 km below sea level and to be underlain by about 1 km of flat-lying Cenozoic sediment incised by large submarine valleys. Structural relationships along the margins of the Plateau are complex, with intense deformation, including folding and reverse faulting, occurring south of a large homoclinal crustal flexure along the southwestern margin.
