Evaluation of Methods for the Detection of Fluorine-Containing Missile Oxidizers

The prospects for development of dosimeter badges and portable detection devices capable of measuring part per million levels of NF3, N2F4, ClF3, and OF2 have been assessed. A survey of the relevant physical and chemical properties of these compounds, their analytical chemistry, and instrumental methods for their detection is presented. Despite the great energy of reaction released when these compounds function as oxidizers in rocket engines, they are kinetically quite inert at ambient temperatures and part per million dilution. It is recommended that oxidizing reactions yielding F(-) by reaction of the oxidizers with Br(-) and I(-) be tested under the above conditions. If successful, a dosimeter should be constructed using either the Cerium/Lanthanum-Alizarin Fluorine Blue color reaction or the fluoride specific ion electrode. The recommended instrumental techniques for developing a portable detectro are electron-capture gas chromatography and pulsed-leak quadrupole mass spectrometry. (Author)
