摘要

The actual and possible uses of essentially non-ionizing radiation in the fabrication of plastics are surveyed. Ultraviolet, infrared, induction, dielectric and microwave heating are explored. Included are discussions of those methods which have reached industrial acceptance, and those techniques which have reasonably well-defined commercial potential. These topics are supplemented by limited discussion on the theory and the physics of the various radiations. The following fabrication methods are discussed. Crosslinking or curing; Heating and drying; Bonding; Thermoforming; and Preheating for transfer molding. The materials and end items to which one or more of these methods are applicable include: glass-reinforced polyesters (laminates, pipes, etc.); coatings and inks; formed sheets; thermoplastic bonded products; molded phenolics, epoxies and other thermosets; ablation shields; urethane foams for furniture, etc.; foundry core binders; and rubber-like materials. Guidelines regarding advantages, disadvantages, and general economics of using these essentially non-ionizing radiations are given.
