Feasibility of Producing a High-Yield Laminated Structural Product. Strength Properties of Rotary Knife-Cut Laminated Southern Pine

The effect of the manufacturing technique on selected strength properties was determined on specimens laminated from four 1/2-inch-thick plies and produced by the FPL press-lam process. The process features rotary knife-cutting of logs, press drying, and gluing to attain a product quickly. Factors which might affect clear wood strength properties include the deep lathe checks which develop during knife-cutting, large temperature gradients imposed during press drying, and the gluability of the press-dried surfaces.
