In part 1 of the investigation, the free vibrations of ring stiffened toroidal shells were studied. The stiffening rings which were assumed placed at meridional sections, were treated as discrete members. Moreover, an arbitrary number of rings differing in properties and unequally spaced were considered. The shell segments, whose motion is accounted for within the linear shell theory, are coupled to the stiffeners by imposing compatibility at the junctions. In part 2 of the investigation, a computer program is employed to obtain numerical results. The frequencies of unstiffened toroidal shells are compared with available results and show concurrence to within 2.1%. Moreover, the iteration technique is shown to converge rapidly. Plots are established showing the effect of the shell parameters on the number of harmonics that must be retained for three-figure accuracy in the frequencies. (Author)
