Low-Melting Fused-Salt Electrolytes

Current thermal cells operate at relatively high temperatures (400-600C) and have relatively short operating lives. Low-melting fused salts are attractive, in principle, for reserve type cells since they simplify considerably materials problems encountered at the higher temperature. An exploratory survey made to assess in a preliminary fashion development of a low-melting fused salt electrolyte is described. Two main classes of low-melting salts were examined briefly: organic fused salts (with and without solvent) and low melting inorganic salts. In all cases, lead was employed as the anode. Cathodes were either lead dioxide or silver chloride.
