The Distributions of Temperature, Salinity, and Sound Velocity in the Western Ionian Sea during Spring, 1968

A frontal zone has been demonstrated in the descriptions of the properties which separates a relatively stagnant area from a dynamically active area. This is a result of flow from the west through the Strait of Sicily carrying with it water fresher than 38.5%. The temperature differences are not very great, however, and with the general latitudinal flow there is probably no season with pronounced temperature change as opposed to the Ionian Sea which receives the flow. From 36 deg 10 min N. to 36 deg 30 min N. high salinity, or Levantine Intermediate Water, encroaches upon the shelf at the entrance to the Sicilian passage between Malta and Sicily. Probably this indicates the source and the path of the supply of Levantine Intermediate Water to the Western Mediterranean. (Author)
