摘要

A substantial portion of the 'noise' which attends the evaluation of sonar system performance is attributable to uncontrolled situational variables which affect the sonar operator's reporting. The study defines a composite model of detection and Bayesian decision performance and then applies the model to destroyer sonar operators detecting targets in a real reverberation environment. Prior to detection, the operators are supplied with explicit information on the variables presumed to affect decision. Operator performance supported the concept of a detectability index varying with sonar-input factors but invariant over situational factors and the concept of an independently estimated decision criterion which varied with situational factors but remained constant over one sonar factor.
