Experiments are reported on the breakage of granite, limestone and sandstone by pulsed water jets using a Voitsekhovsky-type cumulation nozzle with jet velocities up to 1800 m/sec, a jet diameter of 0.716 cm, and piston impact energies up to 65,000 Joules. Data on the specific energy for single pulse spall craters in the face of 30 cm cubic rock samples is plotted against the specific pressure (the ratio of jet stagnation pressure to rock compressive strength). The specific energy decreases rapidly as the jet stagnation pressure is increased from 1.43 to 3.95 times the compressive strength. (Author)
