A Comparison of Two Techniques Used to Develop a Computer Generated Map Type Catalog

The 4th Weather Wing has been developing procedures for the incorporation of computerderived weather map types into a terminal forecast system. This requires the production of an area synoptic map type catalog, which would be the basis for a real time computerized analog system. Once the analog correlation is established, the computer could evaluate prestored probability tables and/or objective forecast studies for the occurrence or nonoccurrence of various phenomena. This computer output would provide a valuable first approximation for the local forecast. The forecaster would then accept, reject, or modify the statistical forecast depending upon his appraisal of other available meteorological information. (Author)
