Experimental work has been concerned primarily with the improvement of interlaminar shear strengths in organic matrix composites using plasma deposited coupling agents. An extremely efficient cleaning process for graphite fibers has been developed using a 2450 MHz plasma. It also appears that unsaturated coupling agents can be used satisfactorily to deposit polymeric materials on the fibers using a 450 KHz plasma. Preliminary data are presented using these two processes. The tensile strengths of NOL rings made of an epoxy matrix and graphite fiber reinforced using different process variables are presented. The two coupling agents studied were ethanol amine and acetylene.
