Synchrotron-Cherenkov Radiation of Relativistic Electrons in a Cold Plasma

The radiation emitted by a relativistic electron in a cold magnetoplasma is calculated employing the method of energy loss. While the power loss per unit frequency interval in the neighborhood of the ionic, electronic, or plasma reasonance is divergent, it is shown to be integrable for each harmonic of the relativistic gyrofrequency. The sum of the power losses over all harmonics, though, is divergent as the logarithm of the maximum harmonic number, for a wide frequency domain depending on the pitch angle alpha and direction of propagation theta. By decomposing the total radiation into longitudinal and transverse parts the transverse portion is shown to be finite everywhere. A computer code has been developed to calculate the total and transverse power spectra for arbitrary plasma and particle parameters. Results for a variety of particle energies and pitch angles are presented. (Author)
