Evaluation of Stabilized Percursors for High-Strength Carbon Fibers

In order to understand the method of direct graphitization more completely, samples of polyacrylonitrile(PAN) fiber were stabilized at various combinations of temperature, tension, and duration of oxidation. The percent weight loss and chemical composition of each residue were then determined. It was found that chemical analyses and weight loss data of the fiber residue can be used to determine the extent of the stabilization of PAN fibers. (Author)
