Storage, Rejuvenation, and Restorage of Human Red Cells for Periods up to 56 Days.

Human red blood cells may be stored at 4 C for periods up to 56 days and then successfully rejuvenated. The rejuvenated red blood cells have nearly normal levels of ATP and 2,3-DPG and retain these elevated levels for at least four days following rejuvenation. This greatly increases the usefulness of stored red blood cells, both in terms of reclaiming the red blood cells for freezing and in rejuvenation to extend the period of 4 C stored blood to 42 to 56 days.
