Are Abnormalities in Insulin Secretion Responsible for Reactive Hypoglycemia.

Seventy patients with strictly defined reactive hypoglycemia were found to have the following types of disease: alimentary (5), diabetic (16), hormonal (5), and idiopathic(44). In comparison to normal control subjects and to weight- and disease-matched patient controls, it was found that all of the patients with hormonal and most patients with idiopathic reactive hypoglycemia (32 of 44) had delayed insulin secretion. Diabetic reactive hypoglycemic patients showed delayed insulin secretion when compared to normal subjects but not when compared to weight-matched diabetic control patients. Excess insulin secretion was found in patients with alimentary reactive hypoglycemia. No abnormality in insulin secretion accounted for the hypoglycemia in the diabetic reactive hypoglycemic patients and some idiopathic reactive hypoglycemic patients. (Author)
