The portion of the Kenai Peninsula Borough covered by this report is subject to flooding from the Kenai River. The properties along this stream are primarily residential and recreational and were moderately damaged by the floods of 1964 and 1969. The areas in the flood plain which are now under pressure for future development are extensive. Although large floods have occurred in the past, studies indicate that even larger floods are possible. This report has been prepared because a knowledge of flood potential and flood hazards is important in land use planning and for management decisions concerning flood plain utilization. It includes a history of flooding along Kenai River and identifies those areas that are subject to possible future floods. Special emphasis is given to these floods through maps, photographs, profiles and cross sections. The report does not provide solutions to flood problems; however, it does furnish a suitable basis for the adoption of land use controls to guide flood plain development and thereby prevent intensification of loss and damage.
