A Preliminary Clinical Chemistry Laboratory Quality Control Programme for Addis Ababa.

A serum pool programme in clinical chemistry was started in Addis Ababa as a control for 5 participating laboratories. Basic statistical indices were calculated to determine the variation within each laboratory and to compare interlaboratory results. Statistical analyses indicated the precision of the various laboratories, the specificity of the various methods and interlaboratory correlation. The variation in methods of analysis, instruments, normal ranges and units for expressing unknowns in Addis Ababa is considerable. It is proposed that a Quality Control Centre be established in Addis Ababa to maintain laboratory reliability within a controlled limit, to help standardize procedures and the reporting of laboratory results, as well as to act as a liaison between physicians and laboratory personnel.
