Reports in Meteorology and Oceanography Number 6. The Fused Quartz Pressure Gauge. III. Measurements of Pressure Fluctuations in the MODE-I Area, August-December, 1972, and High Pressure Calibration

During the period July 1, 1972 to December 31, 1972, the construction of five fused quartz bourdon tube deep sea pressure gauges was completed and they were deployed at sea in the MODE-I area (28 degrees N, 69 degrees 40'W) during two cruises of the R/V EASTWARD. Two one-week records and one three-month record were obtained from three different gauges; on one gauge the sensor was broken by the implosion of a deep sea camera window; and one instrument was not recovered, due to a faulty release. In summary, the data obtained is very promising. The long record has been spectrally analyzed and the tidal amplitudes and phases are in good agreement with measurements at Bermuda, theoretical calculations, and a short-term measurement with a different gauge by Dahlen and Wunsch. The temperature signal shows surprising variability, with occasional changes of 0.056C in 12 hours. (Modified author abstract)
