摘要

Prior to the 1970's,design methodology for airfield pavements represented empirical and theoretical extrapolation of pavement strength based on structural considerations and slab support,with judgment factors to compensate for lack of technology and differences in user requirements. With the great weight range and variations in ground control characteristics of modern aircraft,this combination of judgment and theory no longer adequately serves the pavement designer in meeting the user needs. New approaches and concepts are needed to bring pavement design up to the level of sophistication of aircraft design. Design problems must be related to needs of a wide range of users over extended periods of time and service conditions. (Modified author abstract)
