摘要

Centrifuging, settling, filtering, and paper spot testing procedures were used to evaluate the compatibility (phase separation) of Navy Distillate (ND) fuels with each other and with other Navy fuels. The ND fuels were compatible in all proportions with each other, with Diesel Fuel Marine and with JP-5. Incompatibility was detected in some ND fuels to which 5% or more Navy Special Fuel Oil (NSFO) had been added. Incompatibility increased with an increase in NSFO content. The NAVSHIPS Technical Manual, Chapter 9550, Compatibility Chart is generally suitable for predicting fuel mixture incompatibility, but there is evidence that incompatibility can exist in blends of ND/NSFO outside the safe areas shown in the chart. The paper spot test for fuel incompatiability is the simplest to conduct, but it fails to predict incompatibility reliably. Centrifuging is the most reliable procedure for detecting incompatibility. Centrifuging and settling procedures provide similar results, but settling is not considered practical. In any case, final judgment of ND/NSFO mixture compatibility should be on the fuel mixture/sea-water separation (demulsibility) tests as well as on the absence of phase separation as determined by the procedures listed above.
