Underwater Stereoscopic Television and Display Realism.

Conventional closed-circuit underwater television systems lack display realism,making remote manipulation and positioning difficult. Stereoscopic and head-coupled television systems were developed to provide three-dimensional position and orientation information. Tests show the time required to perform remote positioning and manipulative tasks is reduced when such systems are used. Comparison tests using a single-camera stereoscopic television system and the same system operated in a nonstereoscopic mode showed the average time required to perform a simple precise positioning task was reduced by 24percent. The average position error was reduced by 60percent when the stereoscopic system was used.
