A high-stability temperature-compensated crystal oscillator (HSTCXO) has been developed for eventual use in advanced SSB communications equipment. Important features of the oscillator are small frequency variations with temperature (plus or minus 5 pp 10 to the 8th power from -40 to +80 C), low power (150 mW), fast warmup (1 pp 10 to the 8th power in 1 minute), and insensitivity to load and voltage variations (plus or minus 5 pp 10 to the 9th power). A principal objective of the study, in addition to achieving the desired performance levels, was to develop compensation procedures that are practical and economical for high-volume production. A well-delineated compensation method has been developed and tested in the course of fabricating 10 exploratory models. Compensation is achieved in two steps: coarse, by established voltage divider techniques, and fine, by a new digital technique previously conceived at Collins Radio Company.
