摘要

The long-term goals of this program are to train new scientists to conduct research, and to enhance the abilities of experienced research workers in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (GFD). This field is fundamental to the field of numerical forecasting of ocean, atmosphere, and environment. The objectives of the program are as follows: (1) help graduate students formulate and tackle innovative research problems which are presently at the fringe of our understanding in the field of GFD; (2) promote an exchange of knowledge and ideas among investigators in the different scientific disciplines that deal with the dynamics of stratified fluids, rotating fluids, nonlinear waves, bio- fluid dynamic interactions, etc.; and (3) serve as a clearinghouse for the mathematical, experimental, and computational techniques that serve astrophysics, climate science, geodynamics, meteorology, and oceanography. The program sponsors a summer school of 10 weeks duration each summer. The participants are graduate student Fellows, visiting graduate students, and visiting scientists. About 10 graduate students are admitted as Fellows; they are selected from a pool of applicants from many disciplines who are in their 2nd to 4th year of graduate school. Fellows receive a stipend for the full 10 weeks. A Fellow conducts a research project under the guidance of the staff, provides a written project report, and orally presents the results in the 10th week. The first 2 weeks consist of 10 principal lectures on the summer's topic conducted by an expert in that field. The Fellows also prepare notes of the principal lectures. Lectures by associated participants follow at a rate of roughly 1 or 2 per day for the remaining weeks, except for the last 2 weeks, when student Fellows are given time to complete and present their results. The lecture notes and the written report of the Fellows' projects are contained in a volume that is available on the GFD web site.
