The study describes the biological communities and aquatic exosystems of the Big Stone Lake Watershed, estimates the amount of nutrient runoff, and considers alternative water quality improvement measures. This Phase 1 Study is to provide information on which to base a future project and does not authorize any project work. The Big Stone Lake Watershed borders Minnesota and South Dakota and is at the head of the Minnesota River. Poor water quality and sedimentation has reduced the lake's recreational value. Increases in ammonia nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, and phosphorous characterize the nutrient changes in water quality. (Author)
