A diurnal rhythm of mitotic activity with a maximum in the afternoon hours (1500 hours) and a minimum at night (2400) was established in the epithelium of the white rat colon. During acute radiation sickness, the diurnal rhythm of mm mitoses is maintained with a maximum in the evening hours (1800-2100 hours) and a minimum in the morning hours (0600 hours). The average daily mitotic coefficient of crypt epithelial cells of the rat colon during acute radiation sickness is higher than in control animals.
