Coupons axially loaded beyond a critical stress level induce permanent micromechanical damage which results in subsequent loading degradation. This phenomena will be shown for static tension, static compression, and tensile fatigue types of loading. Such observations are accurate for larger structural elements where edge effects are not significant. Where they are, the results will be low (conservative) as size goes up. Therefore, relating observed damage to failtire criteria and structural design is a reasonable and safe operation.
